We live in a fast-paced society, where everything feels fleeting and technology has, in some ways, made us forget the value of
traditional trades. But far from being a bad thing, at Marmarina we believe it's important to find a middle ground between the past and the future — rescuing, renewing and rediscovering old crafts while making the most of new techniques, which speed up the work in countless ways. Wherever possible, we steer clear of mass production and champion handwork instead, as we do with our artisan wedding invitations. Wedding stationery where the love of its makers comes through in the quality of every handmade piece, in the value of a word written through the art of lettering or calligraphy, and in the care given to the smallest decorative details on the envelope, among others...
How do we make our handmade invitations?
An event as special as a wedding or the union of two people deserves invitations to match. That's why, at Marmarina, we take care of every detail of the wedding stationery from start to finish. The first step is choosing quality paper that respects the printing process. That alone might sound like the basics, yet at Marmarina we go one step further with our wedding invitations, making sure the paper is environmentally friendly — specifically laid paper sourced from sustainably managed forests.
That's another of the great things about handwork. After this, we get in touch with the couple to define, through a chat or a form, the main details and what they expect from their personalised invitations.
Handmade invitations really start to come to life at the sketching stage, a method inspired by the toile de jouy technique, where the first sketches are drawn by hand in a single monochrome tone — that's where the key and the real value lie. Once the design is more or less settled, it's time to choose the paper stock and the colour tones the design will be made in.
And once again, the handcrafted value shines through in the watercolour details and calligraphy. The watercolours are sketched by hand and then digitised. If you're a fan of calligraphy, you'll love knowing that at Marmarina we hand-letter every text using ink, a dip pen, and the elegant English cursive script.
And while we've wanted to focus on the invitations, don't forget that our wedding envelopes are part of them too. And in our case, we also create each one individually and with plenty of care.
